My Best Friend's Third Heart Attack Got Me Thinking

I won't out my best friend by name, but I would like to tell you a little about him. We met in junior high when my mom and new step dad dragged us all off to live in the big city, which frankly scared the hell out of me. Just hours after we moved in, these two guys show up wondering if the new kid plays football. One was wearing a propeller beanie, the other (my best friend) a backward Twins baseball cap and a t-shirt from Led Zeppelin’s 1973 North American Tour. All of a sudden the big city didn't seem so big or scary.

Recently my best friend of 39 years had his third heart attack. And it started me
thinking ...

1) Is legacy important?

2) If the answer is yes, what should that legacy be?

3) More important, who cares? Our children, their children and beyond? Young colleagues? The community? The world? God, or whatever greater reality you happen to believe in?

As a card-carrying member of the boomer generation, I'm thinking a lot more people are asking themselves these same questions. And that's why I'm writing this blog. I want to explore legacy in all its manifestations as a business owner and entrepreneur, as an active member of my community, as a writer and faithful observer of life, and as a father of four children.

Furthermore, I want a space where I can publicly declare my dreams of legacy in hopes that you'll do the same. Nothing heavy handed here, judgmental or born out of a specific religious point of view. But rather, an opportunity to really think about legacy. Because before you know it, your best friend has had his third heart attack.
